Label Spotlight: Cecille/Cecille Numbers

Current Location: Mannheim/Frankfurt

What do I love about Germany besides their cars and beer? Could it be their food? Goodness no. Or perhaps their women? Not after the last time I flew Lufthansa. The answer is their quality music. This week we are showcasing Nick Curly’s Cecille Records. Active since 2007, countless DJ/Producers have gotten their careers jump started with the help of the label. Names like Butch, Sebo K, Uner, Alex Celler, and Robert Dietz.

The sound could be described as a synthesis of House and Techno. The results have been unique that the phrase “Mannheim Sound” has become recognizable in the world of dance music. One of my favorite releases have been Butch’s “Avantgarde”, which to me perfectly represents what the label is all about. Groovy, strange, hypnotic and down right epic. Also, check out The Remixes Part 1, which offers new takes on selected tracks from Nick Curly’s “Between the Line”.

Moving on to the sister label Cecille Number’s, things begin to get interesting. This label specializes in the deeper, and techy side of things. I like Leon’s (Italy) “Like This” and Jacuzzi Boy’s “De La Casa”. More like sonic paintings then standard club tunes, it is no surprise that giants like Loco Dice, Reboot, Luciano, and Carl Cox have given much support. The tracks are solid masterpieces.

If you want to get a taste of the sound of Cecille, you don’t need cross the Atlantic. Ambassador will be showcasing Italy’s Pirupa at Los Globos on October 5th. Make sure to listen for “Get Funky” or “Raw Orbit”, Pirupa’s finest releases on Cecille.

Label Spotlight: Moda Black

…And Then Everything Went Black

Current Location: London/Lincoln/Leicester/Ibiza

Moda: A party, a label, a group of artists, and an eccentric new sound and feel. It’s hard to believe that it’s already been over four years since Jaymo & Andy George, Tom Staar, and Toy Tigers first started pushing their own brand of Electro, Disco, and House onto UK dance floors. What began as small scale parties has blossomed into a full blown label, music blog, and residencies at We Love Space Ibiza and Fabric London. For those of you who pay attention, you may have recognized Jaymo & Andy George gracing the Holy Decks of Pete Tong’s BBC Radio 1 show on September 9th. But there is more. Much more…

A new era has begun, now that our friends from Lincoln launched their sub-label Moda Black. While the original label specialized in energy, playfulness, and a disco/house based sound, Moda Black offers a new sonic experience. To describe the contrast, we drop the tempo a little bit, hold our breath and jump into the deep end. The results are groovy, sexy, and delightful. From deep house tunes with hypnotizing looped and effected vocal samples, to bass-heavy house and garage tracks (see Banger-featuring 2 Bears, Eats Everything, and Idiotproof) that will guarantee shoe-scuffed dance floors.

The new sound is certainly more fluid and emotional but has the same enthusiasm that made Moda what it is today-a force to be reckoned with. The best part is that it’s only been six months. Watch out world! Moda is the new black!

Artist Watch: Cuartero (Spain)

The World of House music better watch out for this rising star. Hailing from Málaga, Spain, this young DJ/Producer has only been at it since 2009. However, he has already gained the support of titans such as Marco Carola, Paco Osuna, Nicole Moudaber, Robert Dietz, and the VIVa MUSIC label boss Steve Lawler. With a class A work ethic and a desire to excel, he has consistently released top quality tracks on labels such as VIVa Music, Soulman Music, Cr2, Witty Tunes, and Maquina Music. His sound can be recognized by deep grooves, techy percussion, heavy bass, and obscure vocal samples. The end results are dance floor bangers that will get people to uncross their arms and move their feet.
